ROY COHN/JACK SMITH was based on one of the most significant theatrical events to take place in the 1990s in New York and Berlin. Ron Vawter played two contrasting characters with little in common except that both were gay and both died of AIDS: New York lawyer Roy Cohn, initially chief advisor to Senator McCarthy and later mentor to Donald Trump, and Jack Smith, a queer icon of the New York underground in the 1960s and 70s. While the stage version consisted of two separate monologues, Godmilow edited the New York production into a cinematic dialogue, in which the theater audience also plays a role.
